At the Nossob Rest Camp in the centre of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, visitors can choose a range of accommodation ranging from camping, cottages and guesthouses.

Nossob Camp lies in the dry riverbed of the Nossob River, which forms the boundary between South Africa and Botswana. The Nossob River only retains water for a short period after exceptional rains. According to the Official Information Brochure SA National Parks, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, 2004, people say the Nossob River flows maybe twice in a hundred years. The last time the river flooded was in 1963 although small pools of standing water forms during the rainy season.

It is not possible to drive by the camp without entering through the gate of the camp. Upon entering the gate from the south, visitors should stop at the first small tree after driving through the gate and look for the White-Faced Scops-Owls resting in the tree during the day.

Facilities at Nossob Camp

Visitors to the camp are able to replenish fuel supplies as well as basic provisions, at the small shop. During the summer months, especially during the local school holidays, ice is not always available. As the temperatures reaches a scorching forty degrees Celsius in the shade during these months, visitors must ensure that they have enough cool drinks to combat heat exhaustion. A small, but well kept swimming pool nestles at the back of the camping ground and offers visitors a chance to cool off in the summer heat.

The predator museum next to the reception office is well worth a visit. The display includes large and small predators of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and informative text and photographs augments the stuffed specimens of the predators on display.

Next to the entrance gate, a pathway leads to a bird hide overlooking a man made watering hole. Various animals arrive during the day to quench their thirst and at night, jackals, owls and occasionally hyena and lion visit the watering point.

Campsites are gravel with no grass. The sites are relatively level and are separated with wooden poles. Each campsite has a fireplace and there are taps for water at the corner of each campsite. Due to the problem with jackals visiting the camp, management mounted the dustbins close to the electrical points and water.

There are nineteen marked campsites with electricity and six without. A generator supplies the electricity and it is switched off during the night.

Shade is at a premium and some of the marked campsites have wooden structures erected to provide shade to the occupants. Several large trees provide shade to the remaining campsites.

Ablution facilities include a scullery for washing dishes and laundry. The washing lines are behind the scullery and secure from outside view.

Cottages and Guesthouses Nossob Rest Camp

Several cottages accommodating between two and six people line the perimeter of the camp. Two luxury guesthouses cater for the discerning traveler who needs the comforts of home while on holiday. All the cottages are equipped with on suite bathrooms and a small fully equipped kitchen.
